Chris Parry 2007 Art Catalogue

2007 saw the emergence of 'Emerge' a selection of works exploring the figurative. However unlike in 2006 series A.MEN instead of such a strong representational depiction these works hark back to 2004 when first exploring the properties of paint. These works are about process. The process of painting and the way paint is, relying on these painterly qualities to depict the figurative. Figurative forms emerge from the paint almost in denial of artistic involvement. Artist Rezi Van lankveld using a similar wet on wet appliaction of paint also depicts her figurative forms with the abstract renderings of wet paint. These samller works were largely exploratory and developmental leading on the AINT.P works.

AINT P was a selection of works put together for exhibition in Christchurch. These works are about PAINT, reliant on the paint and the process to draw out the representational elements, abstract figuratives forms emerge from the paint as if phantasms of the process. A wet on wet process creates fluid forms elusive of specific represenational elements. In these works I try to capture the moment of unseen emergence - the space between absence and presence - the moment of magical formation - Emergence. It's a battle of the forces of the paint with as little as possible artistic interference allowing the figurative abstract forms to emerge organically, belying the artists involvement. The battle between figure and ground. It's about paint/ing in a William Blake meets Rezi Van Lankveld kinda way. Working wet on wet, using a pouring paint technique in oils.

Blurry Phantasms between abstraction and figuration. Featureless and vague figures emerge from the paint drips and brushstrokes in a duo-tone palette. Relishing the conflict between medium and depiction these works stalk an unrelenting ambiguity. The wet on wet process allows for the revelation of the spontaneous image occuring within the density of loosely applied brushstrokes, swirls and paint drips. The resulting works are therefore equally about the image and everything that has gone into making it.
